What Is a Thesis Statement?
A thesis statement is a crucial part of any writing piece. Being a short statement that reflects what the author wants to convey to the one reading the essay, it is the very center of your text. In other words, when you write a thesis statement, you are to make it compliant with the main idea you are proving and support it with main points going further in the text. You can use a life situation, media article, an opinion of a scientist, a scientific theory, video content or a fact proven by science as an argument to support your thesis.
All in all, a function of a thesis statement is to:
- introduce the reader to the main message you intend to deliver;
- understand what the essay will be all about;
- jump to the main points of your writing;
- make your writing straight to the point.
How Does My Thesis Statement Relate to the Rest of My Paper?
Your thesis is the foundation of your paper. To write a successful paper, you must write your entire paper with your thesis in mind. This includes referring to your thesis in the body and conclusion.
If you do this, the reader can stay on track and focus on your points. This prevents confusion and keeps your message clear. However, you must be careful not to make your paper sound boring or repetitive.
Continually ask yourself these questions to keep yourself on the right track:
- How does this word / sentence / paragraph relate to my thesis?
- How does it support and strengthen my thesis?
Where Does The Thesis Statement Go
The first paragraph is the right place to mention the thesis because by this the reader doesn’t get confused about the topic of the paragraph or essay. This is the best way to clear your topic to the reader.
A research paper is a long piece of writing based on your ideas and the research you do as part of your College degree, especially while seeking a doctorate.
In any type of essay, the research paper plays a vital role that helps readers in understanding what their essay is. The research paper shows your opinion on the topic you have decided to write about. Many writers believe that a thesis statement is like an umbrella that carries all the important information along with it. If you don’t have a thesis statement, you’ll end up writing an essay with missing valid and important points. Your thesis application should be flexible. This can happen when you write an essay, many other points may come to mind that you have included. At the same time, it is also important to update your thesis statement. You should update it at the end once your essay is complete so that all points are included.
You should always consider the word count requirement as well. If your essay has enough information and you have reached or exceeded the number of words you still have points in your thesis, then you should shorten the statement of your thesis.
If the research paper is such that it requires prior approval, updating the application may require permission from the instructor or research paper Committee.
If your thesis appears at the beginning of your letter, then you may sometimes feel exploited or simplified. It usually appears after one or two paragraphs.
As an example of a research paper, let me share with you a few lines from the first paragraph of the essay” the crisis of American masculinity,” written by Arthur Schlesinger.
“What happened to the American? For a long time, he seemed completely confident in his masculinity, confident in his male role in society, easy and defined in the sense of sexual identity.”
Writing a paragraph in this way draws readers ‘ attention to the discussion and then focuses on approving the thesis before the actual essay writing begins.
Help with writing an essay? When writing a thesis statement, please avoid statements such as ” the purpose of this document….”or” in this document I will try….”.
The point of writing a thesis statement in an essay is to draw the reader in between the researcher and the reader about this finding of research, logic and assumptions. I can’t see this as just reporting for the sake of people knowing about the investigation. Rather make it interactive, interesting and rise two ways on the subject. In addition, the thesis statement should provide enough unique assumptions and provoke thoughts in the minds of readers so that only one statement is made with a few words put together. Tickle readers ‘ minds with statements that raise enough questions and they hope to get answers in your essay, or at least take a look at it.
What Makes a Strong Thesis Statement?
- A strong thesis statement gives direction to the paper and limits what you need to write about. It also functions to inform your readers of what you will discuss in the body of the paper. All paragraphs of the essay should explain, support, or argue with your thesis.
- A strong thesis statement requires proof; it is not merely a statement of fact. You should support your thesis statement with detailed supporting evidence will interest your readers and motivate them to continue reading the paper.
- Sometimes it is useful to mention your supporting points in your thesis. An example of this could be: John Updike’s Trust Me is a valuable novel for a college syllabus because it allows the reader to become familiar with his writing and provides themes that are easily connected to other works. In the body of your paper, you could write a paragraph or two about each supporting idea. If you write a thesis statement like this it will often help you to keep control of your ideas.
So, What’s the Point?
The point of writing is to impress some idea on your audience in order to influence them somehow. That idea is your thesis. It is the key to writing a successful paper because if is the key to unlocking the reader’s interest. Your thesis must be interesting. It must somehow attract the audience to read on. This will give you an opportunity to explain your idea and possibly influence the audience. That’s the point!
